English as a Second Language

The aim of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Continuing Education is to prepare students to enter regular academic classes and to eventually complete a BC graduation program. All students entering the program must write an assessment to determine their registration level. Each course will take approximately 100 hours to complete. Students will study grammar in a self-paced setting and will work together in classes to improve listening, speaking, and writing skills. Students will advance to the next level when they have completed the prescribed learning outcomes of a course. Secondary school credit will be granted on completion of each ESL course. All students must be landed immigrants or Canadian citizens. International students with appropriate authorization from the International Student Program may be eligible.
Calculus 12 (CALC12)

Learn all the concepts and skills of calculus before your first year in college or university. Topics include review of pertinent algebra skills, limits, Newton’s Quotient, deriatives of algebraic functions (product, quotient and chain rules), application of derivatives, curve sketching (eight step method), maxima/minima problems, implicity differentiation, related rates, Newton’s approximation, anit-deriative, Riemann Sums, the definite integral, methods of integration (substitution, parts, trig substituion, partial fractions) and differential equations (separation of variables).
Biology 11 (BI11)

Biology 11 covers the methods and principles of biology. The emphasis is on microbiology, zoology, and botany. As well, students study basic ecology and environmental issues.
Biology 12 (BI12)
Recommended pre-requisite:
Biology 11

Biology 12 covers the molecular and cellular structure of living things, with an emphasis on the various systems involved in human anatomy and physiology.
Chemistry 11 (CH11)
Recommended pre-requisite:
Principles of Mathematics 10

Chemistry 11 examines chemical formulae, chemical reactions, periodicity, atomic structure, molecular bonding, moles, stoichiometry, and organic chemistry.
Chemistry 12 (CH12)
Recommended pre-requisite:
Chemistry 11

Chemistry 12 covers reaction kinetics and equilibria, solubility, acid-base, and redox chemistry.
Physics 11 (PH11)
Recommended pre-requisite:
Principles of Mathematics 10

Physics 11 deals with the study of motion and force, Newton’s Laws, momentum, work, energy and power, energy of the atom, optics and properties of light.
Physics 12 (PH12)
Recommended pre-requisites:
Physics 11 and Mathematics 12

Physics 12 is an extension of Physics 11. It deals with vectors, static equilibrium, motion in two dimensions, momentum and energy, circular motion and gravity, electrostatics, resistor circuits, magnetic forces, and electromagnetic induction.

Students writing provincial examinations will receive a school mark expressed as a percentage. This mark will represent 60% of the final mark. The provincial examination represents the remaining 40% or the final grade.


First Nations 12 (FN12)

Course only offered through the Learning Centre.

First Nations 12 is an exciting new course. If you wish to learn more about the First Nations culture in British Columbia, this is the learning opportunity for you. Many First Nations resource people will participate in the program delivery.
Geography 12 (GEO12)

In Geography 12, students will examine first the global physical environment and then the current issues arising from human interventions into the environment, including our home environment as well as the lifestyle of people and cultures in various parts of the world. You will improve your skills in mapping and resource management issues, as well as analyze contemporary issues.
History 12 (HI12)
Provincial Examination
Recommended pre-requisite:
Social Studies11


History 12 looks at the people and events of the 20th century including the rise and fall of communism, the Cold War, and the great European wars.
Law 12 (LAW12)
Semester 1

Studying law increases your ability to evaluate all of the legal information that surrounds you. This course will allow you to:

    • contrast legal rights and reponsibilities of individuals, groups, and organizations
      in Canadian society

    • demonstrate an understanding of the structure and jurisdiction of the Canadian
       court system

    • describe the process involved in resolving disputes

    • differentiate between civil and criminal law

    • analyse the impact of the constitution and human rights legislation on society

    Note: This course has an accelerated schedule, from September to December, on one                night per week.
Conveyancing 12
Semester 1

This course is designed to give students the opportunity to develop wider skills, qualities and values applicable to post-graduation employment in a law firm or other real estate related office (i.e., real estate office or mortgage broker) through the acquisition and application of conveyancing skills and theory. You will learn about convenyancing, land purchase transactions, gathering of specific information, completion and preparation of documents, statement adjustments and trust reconciliation.

AP Psychology 12 (APPY12)

AP Psychology is an introduction to the fascinating world of human behaviour and the physiological and cognitive processes that underlie it. During the course of our studies we discover sensation, perception, motivation, emotions, human development, the basis of personality, etc. If you are interested in finding out why we may be as we are, this is the course for you. In addition to the regular class assignments and quizzes, AP Psychology 12 has an optional final exam for students who choose to take it. Should students choose to take the exam and pass it, they will receive credit for first year University Psychology. There is a cost associated with this optional exam.
Social Psychology 12 (SPY12)
Family Management 12 credit or equivalent credit – FM12

Why do we give over to authority? What are the sources of kindness and cruelty? Why do some people conform more than others? How does a mob start? How does the media and advertising sway our beliefs? If you have ever asked yourself any of these questions, or any like them, Social Psychology will allow you to pursue the answers. Social Psychology is the scientific study of how the thoughts, feelings, and actions of others affect you.
Social Studies 11 (SS11)
Provincial Examination

In Social Studies 11, you will consider answers to these questions: How does government work at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels? What important events have made Canada the country it is today? What are the environmental problems faced by people in various parts of the world? What is Canada’s role in the world?
Aboriginal Studies 12

Course Description
The course will be comprised of a series of lessons and experiences which explore aboriginal teachings, beliefs, healing techniques, history, prophecy and culture from various aboriginal traditions.

Rationale
This course is designed to empower students to recognize the importance of their role in this time of global transformation and healing. It will assist students in creating a culture of gentleness and peace through the exploration of traditional aboriginal teachings and beliefs and traditional healing techniques. This course has been designed for learners from grades 11 and 12 through to practicing professionals. In short, all learners are welcome to register!

Credit/Credential Options: 2 credits (half course with presentation), 4 credits (full course with presenation) and half and full course certificate for graduates, professional participants, community participants and staff participants.
